The Complete Guide to Weighted GPA
Weighted GPA is one of the most misunderstood metrics in college admissions. Unlike unweighted GPA (which caps at 4.0), weighted GPA rewards students for taking challenging courses like AP, Honors, and IB. This means your weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 — and that's exactly why it matters for competitive college applications.
What is Weighted GPA?
Weighted GPA adds extra points to grades earned in advanced courses. A regular A = 4.0, an Honors A = 4.5, and an AP/IB A = 5.0 (on a 5.0 scale). This system incentivizes students to take challenging courses without fear of lowering their GPA.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
- Unweighted GPA: A = 4.0 max, all courses treated equally
- Weighted GPA: A = 5.0+ max, advanced courses get bonus points
Colleges look at both. Unweighted GPA shows your raw academic performance; weighted GPA shows your willingness to take challenging courses.
How Different Scales Work
4.0 Scale: Standard unweighted scale. No bonus for advanced courses.
5.0 Scale: Most common weighted scale. AP/IB courses earn up to 5.0 for an A.
6.0 Scale: Some competitive districts. AP/IB courses can earn up to 6.0.
100-Point Scale: Percentage-based. Advanced courses may add 5-10 bonus points.
Special Weighted GPA Systems
UC Weighted GPA (University of California)
The UC system calculates a capped weighted GPA:
- Only 10th and 11th grade courses count
- +1.0 for each AP, IB, or UC-approved Honors course (up to 8 semesters)
- Maximum weighted GPA: 4.40
IB Weighted GPA
International Baccalaureate courses:
- Higher Level (HL): +1.0 bonus
- Standard Level (SL): +0.5 bonus
- Policies vary by school
ACA Weighted GPA
Some schools use an "ACA" (Academic) weighted scale where core academic courses receive full weight and electives receive reduced weight.
What is a Good Weighted GPA?
- 4.5+ (5.0 scale): Outstanding — Ivy League competitive
- 4.0-4.5: Excellent — top universities
- 3.5-4.0: Very Good — strong colleges
- 3.0-3.5: Good — most colleges
- 2.5-3.0: Average — some colleges
How to Convert Unweighted to Weighted GPA
To convert, you need course-level data. For each Honors course, add 0.5; for each AP/IB course, add 1.0. Then recalculate using the weighted formula. Without knowing which courses were advanced, you can't accurately convert.
Middle School Weighted GPA
Some middle schools use weighted GPA for high school credit courses (like Algebra 1 or foreign languages). The same formula applies — advanced courses get higher weight.
